More scooters in the news. You can almost directly correlate the number of scooter sales to the price of gas. When scooters can get 60-100 miles per gallon, and you can fill one up for $5.00, of course the sales will go up.

Ubiquitous in Europe for decades, the little motorbikes are selling madly stateside, with sales up 24 percent over last year. Prices range from $800 for no-name imports to $8,000 for the best-known brands, such as Vespa, but scooter fans say the machines pay for themselves before long.

In times of tight budgets and rising gas prices, scooter are making their way into all uses. Police are now looking to use scooters to save money. I think it is a great idea, not only do they save money for the tax payers on the initial purchase, but over the life of the scooters, they will save thousands on gas.

JACKSON, Tenn. (AP) - The Jackson police department isn’t just trying to save gas money by adding more electric scooters, but it couldn’t hurt.

The department will purchase four Segways, the self-balancing, two-wheeled vehicles that propel riders standing up, with a $50,000 state grant.

Police Chief Rick Staples said the other benefits besides using less gas than police cruisers are that the scooters are tall enough to give officers a good perspective around them, fast enough to catch suspects running on foot and unusual enough to start a conversation.

All the city’s departments have budgeted 30% more for fuel in the next fiscal year and many are looking at new ways to reduce costs.
